The name Silapathar derived from the flowing nature of stream. It has been stated that the flowing nature of the stream contain a thin layer of waves called ‘Sil’, and from this, the town got the name ‘Sila’ and the embankment of river was highland (above 25-30 ft. High), which is locally called ‘Gorah’, hence the area was once known as sila-bor-gorah. In the year 1950 great earthquake divested this area and submerged the sila-bor-gorah and from that onwards this area was known as Silapathar.

Another view the name of Silapathar is that during 1950 earthquake, this area was flooded and enormous pebbles, stones (sil) came along with water from the mountains and spread in and around this area, hence the area is called Silapathar. In 1978, market area of Silapathar, achieved the status of community town and in the year 1997, this community town has been upgraded to Silapathar town committee as per rules. 

Geography-

Silapathar town is a growing commercial town of Assam in Sissiborgaon revenue circle of Dhemaji district. It is located at 94°43’12” E Longitude and 27°35’43” N Latitude. The town is situated on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River and is about, 470 kilometres from Guwahati and is only 6 kilometres from the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Nearest railway station is Silapathar which is within the city and nearest airport is located at Dibrugarh district which is about 50 km away from the city.

Demography-

Silapathar Town was divided into 4 wards until 2014 for which elections are held every 5 years. The Town Committee has population of 25,662 of which 13,350 are males while 12,312 are females as per report released by Census India 2011. Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 3086 which is 12.03 % of total population of Silapathar (TC). In Silapathar Town Committee, Female Sex Ratio is of 922 against state average of 958. Moreover Child Sex Ratio in Silapathar is around 929 compared to Assam state average of 962. Literacy rate of Silapathar city is 83.25 % higher than state average of 72.19 %. In Silapathar, Male literacy is around 87.72 % while female literacy rate is 78.39 %.

Silapathar Municipal Board has total administration over 5,173and is also authorize to build roads within Town Committee limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction to provide basic amenities like water and sewerage, etc,.

Current estimated population of Silapathar Municipal Board in 2023 is approximately 35,200. The schedule census of 2021 for Silapathar city is postponed due to COVID. The current data for Silapathar town are estimated only but all 2011 figures are accurate.
Schedule Tribe (ST) constitutes 16.19 % while Schedule Caste (SC) were 6.57 % of total population in Silapathar (TC).
Out of total population, 7,820 were engaged in work or business activity. Of this 6,704 were males while 1,116 were females. In census survey, worker is defined as person who does business, job, service, and cultivator and labour activity. Of total 7820 working population, 88.70 % were engaged in Main Work while 11.30 % of total workers were engaged in Marginal Work.
